February 26

Winter storm Rocky arrived in Michigan on February 26, but not until noon-ish.

This is 8:20 am.

They said we'd start getting the storm at 2 or 3 pm, but maybe they meant that was when it would start to get icky.  Reality was that it started raining at noon.

At 4 pm I took this pic of the neighbor moving her son's car into their driveway, and that's when I noticed the ice in the trees..........  Note the ice on the higher branches, but not the lower ones.....

At 5 pm it was snowing.

At 5:20 it was snowing harder.

At 6 pm it was sticking to everything.

Looking out the back window at 6:10.

Same as above, posteredged.

Same, with colored-pencil filter.  (As always, click on an image to embiggen.)

Same, with poster-edges.

Same with watercolor filter.

I had thought I'd walk the dog before the storm started, but the rain, beginning at noon, threw me off.  Wilbur hates rain (especially cold rain).  We waited until it turned to snow, and walked late the afternoon.

It was GORGEOUS out.  I didn't take the camera, because it was snowing, but my, my.  So pretty.........

I walked me after he and I moseyed around the block.  I'm sure it just got prettier and prettier, but it also got darker and darker, so it was harder to see............

not everybody appreciates the ice in the trees

Having your favorite hangout covered in ice can be a drag. Especially if, should you slip, it's a long way down.....

I've noticed the squirrels spending more time on the ground than usual.

This guy, however, was chasing around in this tree with another squirrel. A lady friend, perhaps? Love outranks fear of falling..........

ice in the trees

This is a pretty good representation of what the ice in the trees looks like, in full sun. The camera did not, unfortunately, capture the rainbow glints that show up everywhere when you see this phenomenon in person.

It really is spectacular.

Ice storms only happen when the temperature hovers right around freezing. It's usually the case that the air warms up enough, the very next day, to melt all the ice. This time is unusual. It started freezing on Sunday, and most of the ice is still in the trees on Wednesday.

Ice storms are destructive and disruptive enough that they can't really be wished for, but they can certainly be appreciated for their beauty once they're here.

ice and sun

It is clear and sunny today (and mid-20sF, so not all that cold).

This is bad -- there shouldn't be frost on the storm windows. But it's beautiful, isn't it?

This is bad, too, I guess -- lots of branches and whole trees down, power outages, etc. But isn't it gorgeous?

ice storm

The aftermath of an ice storm is particularly spectacular when the sun comes out....

This was taken just moments ago.

Sometimes a little *more* adversity

makes the adversity you already had seem less significant.....

You'll recall that we can't use our garage.

This morning we woke up to this:

Which is beautiful:

But causes this:

Which tends to fall on the electric wires, and cause [imagine here a pic, which I did not think to take, of our (mechanical) thermostat, showing the interior temp in our house at 55F].

Which requires getting in line for this:

Which, hallelujah, results in the prettiest thing I saw all day (smoke coming out our chimney from the furnace)...........
