Many moons ago, when I was in jr. high, one of my friends did a science project on plate tectonics, which he presented to our science class.
I had no idea at the time how cutting-edge that was. Fifty years later, it is understood that continents sail (verrry slowly, from our zippy human perception of time) hither and thither around the Earth, crashing (slowwwly) into each other, and then moving off.
We are still learning about plate tectonics. This article, from The Conversation, suggests that life might not be possible without plate tectonics, and states that Earth is the only known planet which has plate tectonics.
