sharing the beach (or not)

People wondered why I wanted to visit the beach in October, and this would be why:

I generally don't like to have people (or their constructions) in my pics, but these two images are "journalistic" in the sense that I just shot them, without trying to edge out intrusive humans.

The beach was pretty much empty of people, all the time I was there, calloo, calay.

Of course the beach was not totally deserted. Note the gull's feathers being blown by the wind.

The wind itself brought visitors to the beach. The surf wasn't as high as this on Sunday, and there were no surfers on Sunday.....

There were, however, plenty of gulls.

Sunday was the first time I've ever been on the beach at sunset. Gulls flew in from way out over the ocean, apparently intending to spend the night on the beach. Some of these are already on one leg with their heads tucked in on their backs. Others are performing their evening self-care routines.

I said I wasn't going to show you any trash, but I lied. See that red cup?

I photoshopped it out of the pic, here, and in reality, I picked it up and put it in a trash can. The pic looks better without that jarring red, and so did the beach.

Don't you love the polkadots on the gulls' tails?

I prefer the beach when it is empty too, I love going to our house on the coast in late autumn/winter/early spring because Bilbo and I nearly always have the beach to ourselves then. It's on the stormy Atlantic coast of Britain and the sea is really spectacular and often dangerous in the winter. Every year there is at least one person swept out to sea and drowned because they don't respect the power of the ocean.

Thankx, Vic! (The x a typo, but it amused me so I'm leaving it. :-) ) Hope you enjoy the soup -- I've made it exactly once, so you will be a real guinea pig!

Rowan, I envy you your house on the coast! Like you, I would rather visit NOT in high season. I saw a sign on the path to this beach which informed people that they should swim parallel to the coast, rather than trying to swim right toward land, if the were caught in a rip current.

I had no interest in swimming (not to mention the water was pretty cold), but I did get wet about half-way up to my knees as the waves came and went.

My dogs are jealous -- there is no leash requirement in Ocean City in the off season. They would have loved to run on the beach. I saw quite a few dogs there, but didn't photograph them.
