August 10 -- afternoon -- victorious!; rain; after the rain

.

Wheeeee!  A view!  An excellent view!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I got everything moved to the new room in just two trips.  It took a while, including making sure, really sure, that the safe in the old room was totally empty.  (This involved climbing on a chair -- the shelves in the closets, to which the safes were bolted, were over my head.........)

Sitting by the airshaft, waiting for 1:00, I had wondered if it was raining, but I couldn't really tell.   As you see -- it *was* raining.  It was supposed to rain on Sunday, but didn't.  I didn't think it was supposed to rain on Monday, but it did.

I would have been crabby, if confined to that air shaft, as the rain poured down outside.  As it was, I was thrilled to be able to sit by my very own view, checking out the haps.  (Lake!!!!!  See the lake???  And the fountain???  YAY!!!)

It was dark, it was wet, but I didn't care......

I could see the lake.  I could see the flowers in the middle of Michigan Ave.

Here's a look from farther back into the room than nose-mashed-up-against-the-window....  A bay window.  I'd never really understood bay windows before I had this one.  You can see so much more, because you can so easily see to the sides.......

Have I mentioned that the rooms in this hotel have 12' ceilings?  That really does make even a relatively small room seem bigger.

And you know this is *our* room, because of the Cheerios.

It rained, off and on, most of the afternoon.  This next image is looking mostly east, a little south.

This is mostly north, a little east.

Straight east.  A touring pack of Segway-ers were not deterred by the rain.  I was amused by their billowing "raincoats."

Tourists, with reflections.........

Those things must be easier to control than I would have thought -- I saw a LOT of people riding them, and while I saw some riders that looked a bit tentative, I didn't see anyone have any trouble doing what they needed to do, nor did I see anyone endangering anyone else.

Looking south through the south side of my bay window.

A brighter moment.

The sun must have been working to come through -- more light on the sculpture and the fountain than before.  Love that white water against the dark sky!

Look, we can see the west end of the Field Museum!  Right from our hotel room!

A gang of crows was playing over one of the big pillar things in the park.  I think there were five of them.  They kept landing, and then dive-bombing each other.  I'm not sure it was play, but I concluded it was, as it went on and on, and it wasn't always the same ones doing the dive-bombing.  The bomb-ers and the bomb-ees seemed to trade off.....

Looking way out at the edge of what we can see of the lake.  See the really big ship, right on the horizon, about a quarter of the way in from the right?  It's visible as distortion of the horizon....  And the white blob, almost at the right edge, just below the horizon, is a speed boat.....  So much to see from this room!  If I lived here, in this room, with this view, I would *totally* have a telescope!

It cleared up!  Blue sky!

Then it rained some more.  I call this one Red Lights.  Maybe it should be Red Lights and Wet Pedestrians.

It finally quit raining.  We took the umbrellas along when we went out for dinner, but did not need them.

These are at the southwest corner of the parks.  They are supposed to be a warning about what crowds of people will do, when individuals fail to think about the consequences of their actions.  Or, at least -- I believe that is one of the interpretations.

While I do not approve of action without consideration (except in cases of actual emergency), I haven't any confidence that encountering this sculpture will stop future Nazis from doing what Nazis do (whatever they call themselves).  And I note that the classical-looking statue (green, upper right) has turned her back on them.

Looking north, just east of Michigan Ave.

We went in search of a Nepali restaurant.  We found the one we were looking for, but it had a sign saying it was closed on Mondays.  At least they also had info directing us to another Nepali restaurant nearby.  We went to that one.  I guess it was pretty good -- my dish, unfortunately, was too hot for me to be able to enjoy it, despite its "mild" description in the menu.

Walking back to the hotel, we passed this poster in one of the Columbia College buildings.  I like it.

One last shot of this sculpture for the 10th, this time from ground level.  I rather like this, but ... all those tacky lights and road signs....  No.

Luckily, I have a choice.  I'm not all that fond of the blown-out sky -- but it made it easy to write "sky" over all of that mess behind the statue.  I like this better!
