I don't remember ever seeing a white caterpillar before September 1. I think this is a Hickory Tussock Moth caterpillar. They are, apparently, toxic from their barbed white spines to their poisonous interiors. This one was marching across the sidewalk. Toxicity won't save it from being stepped on....... I used a leaf to poke it and urge it toward the grass...... I think it was between 1.5 and 2" long.
I think this is a goldenrod that is new to me. The flowers are gigantic in comparison to the goldenrod I'm familiar with. These are at least half an inch across.
