May 19. On our way to the southwest for our Grand Canyon expedition.
DTW was busy, as always.
Notice how green Michigan is...........
It was cloudy for the first half of the flight. Snow in Colorado.
Cloudy again for a long way.
No snow here................ So dry. So impossibly dry.
Closer look at the river at left above.
I don't know why I think of the dry country as flat. It's not. Nor is it evenly dry.
I am appalled that we think it is ok to do whatever we want to the face of the planet. Appalled that we pretend a reservoir is a lake, and appalled that we think it's ok to pollute what is supposed to be someone's drinking water with our powerboats.
Appalled that we do this to our only home, in service to more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more humans, nevermind anything else.
Appalled also by this -- a huge town devoted to selling people stuff that's bad for them when consumed in quantity.
The Strip in Las Vegas is composed of buildings so enormous that the scale is hard to grasp. You think "It's just a few blocks long." This is true, but it's also a few miles long........ And this isn't all of it.
We rented a car. We went to Target (for a cooler, and water, and a map, and I wanted a hat). We went to Whole Foods. For food for traveling and hiking, and for dinner.
We drove north through the darkening night to Overton, NV.
We saw more stars than I'd seen since I was in Tuscany in 2013.
