Charlotte, as you no doubt noticed from the in-the-air pic, has a compact uptown (as they call downtown, in Charlotte).
This was taken at the corner of Tryon and 9th, looking southeast (Charlotte's grid is on a diagonal to the compass....). Our elderly and infirm motel was the poor relation at this intersection.
The rest of our motel's block looked like this.
We walked around the block.
The ratty thing with bars (lower right corner) is the back of our motel. There were no bars on the other side, where our room was. I bet the neighborhood behind the motel was nasty, at one time. Now it is upscale high-rise condos......
Given the lack of maintenance at the motel, my surmise was that it was due for the wrecking ball any minute. It seems clear that they are making more money selling parking than taking in travelers for the night. The man behind the front desk told me that the property had not been sold, yet, when I asked him when the motel was coming down. Clearly its days are numbered, and they are not putting any money into it at all.
It was cheap, and quiet, and the important bits were clean.......
Charlotte is on an upswing, if the new construction tells a true story. Lots of new condos going up.....
