Sept. 23 -- Toledo Zoo polar bear cub

The Toledo Zoo has three polar bear cubs. They were born last winter to two mothers.

On the 23rd, the mom with the pair of cubs was outside with her kids.

I was surprised how big they are. They are smaller than mom, but the way a 10-year-old kid is smaller than mom, not the way a 4-year-old kid is smaller.

They are big, and capable.

This one had a lovely time with a plastic box.

She liked *popping* up out of the water and *pouncing* on the box.

Gotcha!

This one makes me think of Maurice Sendak's Little Bear.

Polar bears have black skin. Their hair is translucent and wicks the sunlight down to their skin, to help them keep warm. You can really see that black skin on this wet cub.

Thank *you*! :-)

It's fun to watch a kid having a good time, isn't it. :-)
