Sept. 23 -- Toledo Zoo hippo

The zoo has a wonderful hippoquarium.

You can be just a few inches from a hippo as it trots by, under water, on the other side of the plexiglas.

On the 23rd, the hippos had just left the water.

They have such dainty feet, in relation to their bulk. This is, of course, because they spend most of their time in the water.

They are very graceful, trotting along underwater, with the water supporting their weight.

You sort of expect that their faces will be bristly, and maybe their tails. I was surprised to see, in this next shot, that they are rather bristly all over. (as always, click on a pic to see a larger version)
