Surgery postponed until next week.
I talked to our local vet yesterday (after scheduling the surgery). She thinks that his molars are hanging by threads and should come out, as he will be anesthetized anyway, and dental work requires preparation with antibiotics in chemo patients.
She said we should wait on the result of the urine culture and urine protein analysis and then we'll have a better idea how to support him during surgery (what should be in his iv fluids) and can tailor his pre-op antibiotics to anything they may find in the urine (and those antibiotics should be fine for the teeth, too). I need to talk to her about anesthesia. He hasn't been knocked out since his neuter 9 years ago -- and given that several drugs seem to be too much for him at the "normal dose"......
So, anyway, that's the plan. Get organized, *then* get the bumps off (and lose the teeth that may be contributing to a general lessening of good health).
Next week is good -- I'll be home to yell at him if he tries to mess with his incision..... I expect that the one on the front of his neck will be a couple of inches long. (My only experience with bump removal was my first dog, who had something the size of a pea taken off the top of her head, and the incision was well over an inch long....) The other two places are much smaller -- but the shoulder one is the diameter of a pea, though flatter. Who knows.
He won't be able to wear a collar. Wondering if he will need a harness......
Thank you for the good thoughts. Much appreciated!
