the joys of home ownership, part 8,623,807

.

So we've had this weird thing happening under the kitchen sink ever since we bought the house in 1985.

Two sinks; separate connections into the Y-shaped pipe that leads to the sewer. The right sink, with the garbage disposal, drains into the slanty upper leg of the Y (pretty much in the middle of the pic). The left sink drains into the pipe you can see going straight across behind the garbage disposal, where it connects to the vertical upper leg of the Y that is at the right side of this pic.

The right sink has never caused us a problem.

The left sink is always on the slow side, and periodically closes up to the point where it barely drains. This last week it outdid itself, and stopped entirely.

Sigh.

Over the years...

...we have plunged. (In times past, bringing up handfuls of what appeared to be paintbrush bristles. ?!?!?!?) I did, in fact, plunge, week before last, but to no avail.

...we have put drain cleaner down.

...we have had multiple professionals mess with this.

It seems odd -- given how little pipe there is above pipe that is working fine -- why is this problem so intransigent??????????

Last night I decided I had to try messing with it.

I plunged. That actually got it to drain, if verrrrrrry slowly.

Once it drained at all, I put drain cleaner down it.

Then it was back to not draining at all. ARGH.

I tapped on the pipe a few times, and, hallelujah, it drained again. Verrrrrrrry slowly.

You can see the trickle of water going down. At this point the water level in the pipe from the sink held steady with this much water coming from the tap.

That was progress. Once I'd run enough clean water down it that I thought I could safely plunge (drain cleaner washed down!), I did so. A lot.

Hallelujah again!

Victorious!

Holding steady with this much water from the tap! (This pic obviously taken after I'd scoured the sink!)

So odd, that this can't seem to be FIXED.

Ah well. Better today than last week; I guess that's the best that can be hoped!
