Chicago quilt show -- April 17

.

After breakfast on the 17th, I set out to take some pics before the quilt show opened at 10.

It was another beautiful day.

The sky was so blue it almost overwhelmed the pink of the window glass.

I wish I could share the scent of these magnolias as easily as I can share their pictures.

Trees and hotel cylinder.

The first thing I did in the convention center on Friday morning was check the Quilting Arts ATC exchange wall and retrieve my ATC. Wahoo!

On the other side of the ATC exchange wall, they were displaying some of the most successful entries for their "Life is like a box of ..." challenge.

Lots of good ones.

Love all the stuff she used in this! Knife, little wrench, clamp, etc, etc!

One of the themes for me, from this show, was that it's ok when the materials you are working with are not perfect. We saw stamped images, of which some faded to nothingness. We saw these photographs, beaten by time, but still interesting and still adding much to this piece.

Fashion is so often absurd.......

Note that some of these pics have been raised above the surface of the piece.

I believe the bottom right image is ripped nearly right through, and yet still it is a good addition. I hope I can remember this "imperfection ok" notion.........

Didn't get the label in the same pic as the work for the next one -- Crayons, made by Linda Trenholm.

Back outside for a break in the sun. Note the shadow of the loopy piece of grass in the lower right...........

Did I mention we were right across the street from O'Hare?

This dove was making a nest in one of the evergreens we looked at yesterday. It took quite a few twigs and pieces of grass up while I watched.

After lunch, we looked at vendors' wares. The one time I asked permission to photograph a detail of a quilt in a booth, permission was declined. Fie on 'em. I didn't take any pics.

Well, hardly any.

Don't you love this? Doesn't it remind you of folk painting on furniture, from days gone by? So glad someone is still doing it.............

This is back in the Quilting Arts section. They were selling a lot of books and videos, and the person who made this is one of the teachers on their videos.

I mentioned before that I thought quilts with people were often more effective when they'd been abstracted.

I love that this one is all blue. That it has exactly four fabrics. That the fabrics seem to have been chosen for their hue and value, rather than for what, precisely, is their surface imagery.
