This is the way from our back step to the back yard.
Several months ago Buzz began to drag his left rear foot enough that its center two nails were worn down to nubs. In order to help with that issue, we put a strip of old carpeting over the concrete. (When they replaced our old carpet in the family room last fall, they asked me if I wanted to keep any of it. The strip against the window wall looked like it was in pretty good shape, so they sliced that loose from the rest and rolled it up for me. At one point during the winter we unrolled it in the upstairs hallway, and ... it didn't really look -- or smell... -- very good. After that it went into the garage, awaiting disposition. I decided it could do its last work helping protect Buzz's toes.)
It was very nice (in its day!) wool carpeting.
It held on to water with intent and purpose, and over time got greener and greener. A very nice home for algae. Apparently.
Last week it got moved to the (hot asphalt) driveway to dry a bit, and this morning it's in the bin waiting for trash collection.
Some of the algae remains.........
Wilbur has "poodle toes."
(I recognize that is a calumny against poodles, who originated as retrievers from water, but it sounds better than "foo-foo dog toes," so I hope I can be forgiven on the grounds of artistic license.)
During his first year, Burt was a homeless dog. I think he decided he's already spent more of his life wet than anyone would ever choose, and, going forward, he's never going to be wet if he can help it.
He hates walking on anything wet.
He has developed the habit of hugging the fence to avoid the wet carpet, and is still doing so now that there is no carpet. I expect he'll do that for the rest of his days, having forgotten why............
