.
We had a bat in the house last night.
I was in the bedroom, reading, facing the doorway. Wibber was in there, too.
My better half was in the study, reading.
I thought I saw something Large fly by the doorway, and then heard from the other room "Hey! There's something big....."
("Big" -- well, of course for a mammal it was small, and even for a bat, it was small, though for a bat in our area, I think it was bigger rather than smaller. And it was by far the biggest thing we've ever had *fly* in the house......)
It went back and forth through the upstairs.
We began to close doors, herding it toward the Door to Nowhere.
(There used to be a deck over the family room, and there is a door to outside at the top of the stairs, which used to lead to the deck, when there was a deck.)
The Door to Nowhere was opened, and its screen propped open. We closed all the doors upstairs (blocking Wibbs in the bedroom). The light outside by the garage was turned on, and the light in the upstairs hallway was turned off.
No more bat.
Whew.
That was a LOT easier than the squirrel last fall!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Bats, of course, know when there is an opening to Out.
I am wondering if the cages over the tops of our chimney that are supposed to exclude such visitors are not working.
In 24 years in this house, we have never had any intruders other than invertibrates and mice, until this last less-than-12-months, when we have had a large squirrel and now a bat.........
All and all, I'd rather have a bat than a squirrel.
Aside from the chance of rabies, that is................
I'm not sure Wibbs ever knew what was going on. He was clear Something Was Afoot, but he never got off the bed. I'd been eating pretzels when we spotted the bat, and forgot about them, leaving the open bag on the bed. It may be that he was so fixated on being a Good Dog and not touching the pretzels that he didn't even realize we had An Intruder........
