they've got to be kidding...........

.

So yesterday there was a call on our answering machine, purporting to be Capital One's fraud department, and telling us to call an 800 number with credit card in hand.

Really?

I mean ... really???

Does anyone *really* respond to a recorded call, which could be from any random thief, and give whoever is on the other end their credit card number?

I called the number on the back of my card (having fished out some reading glasses -- what is their point, printing that number in microscopic digits?), and waded through the options.

It turns out that fraud is one of the things for which you get to a person rather quickly...........

The nice young man (in India) with whom I spoke verified that the number left on our answering machine was, in fact, the Cap One fraud dept. Then he asked me about the most recent large charges on my account with me (vet, vet, dentist -- in reverse chronological order, you saw that coming, didn't you?), and said there was no fraud check on my account. (Digression: He showed the charge from the vet this evening -- that's the way I expect things to be in This Computer Age, but so often it seems that the right hand doesn't know about the left's doings, for reasons that escape me............ End of digression.)

The phone call on our machine had not said whether they wanted me or my better half, so he got involved at this point. He'd made a couple of charges last night, in addition to the ones at IKEA last weekend........... Turns out it was those from last night which had triggered the questions. He told them all was well, and that was that.

I'm glad they're keeping track.

I'm still weirded out that anyone would call some random number left on their answering machine by some random call-generating machine, and give whoever answers the phone their credit card number......................................

Bad Idea. Very bad.

Why on earth would any credit card company suggest that anyone do such a thing????????

Strange. Way more than passing strange, imh.

Although those calls freak me out a bit, I'm glad someone is keeping track of sudden large charges on my card -- however, returning a basically anonymous call "with my credit card ready" is not an option.

Agreed, on all counts.
