In our family, it is traditional to have plumbing issues over the holidays.
I remember a time when I was a little kid and the pipe between the house and the street was clogged at my grandparents' house. Fifteen or so years later, my dad and I were crawling under the kitchen sink at my parents' house. More recently, the whole clan was at my brother's, and ... something was clogged ... if I am remembering properly. (that one more blurry in my mind; I wasn't the one working on it!)
This year it was our turn to take the holiday family plumbing hit.
Our tub has been draining s l o w l y for the last couple of weeks, and yesterday, plunging made it worse; it was stopped dead. (I'm not sure you can tell; the plunger is floating.....)

After waiting several hours to see if it would drain, I bailed it. Apparently it had been draining just a wee bit. After it was bailed, the water retreated (s l o w l y) down into the pipes.
We applied as much drain cleaner as would fit in the drain/pipe without being in the tub as well. And repeated that maneuver several times. It drained, but verrrrrry slowly.
Overnight we trickled water down it, to wash the caustic solution down.
The first shower this morning filled the tub to ankle depth, despite concentrated effort to use as little water as possible.
Shortly after the first shower, though, the tub was empty.
The second showerer (and the third) found that the tub drained better than it had in weeks.
Apparently, some time after the first shower, the clog moved.
Huzzah.
We'll celebrate with a bit of this. Homemade bread pudding, with cranberries.
Yummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

Our chef is on her way back east. It's good that Christmas is coming right up; we'll get to see her again soon!

I am certainly able to empathize over holiday plumbing issues. I'm still sitting at home waiting for the disaster clean-up guys to finish mopping up water, cutting out drywall, etc. Aaargh!
Eep!
I guess I'll stop complaining!
All of our mess was confined to the tub (and some drips on dog-feet towels when I was bailing -- sometimes it's distinctly good to have a little bathroom, so the distance between the tub and the toilet is small!), and the expense was limited to a bottle of drain cleaner.....
Hoping everything is back to normal for you very soon!
