December 8 -- crows

.

The 8th was a chilly and windy day. The crows wheeled around at dusk, looking for The Right Trees for the night's roosting.

I have so many questions about all of this.

Why do they gather? They don't (in daylight, at least) huddle. They are scattered, each with its personal space.

Why do they choose the tips of the highest twigs? Better safety from predators, perhaps.....

And my perennial two questions about this -- who decides where they will roost on a given night, and who decides who will decide?

I used video to show how much the branches were moving, and was pleased to catch a few crows settling (for the moment) in this tree outside my office window. (little camera = no sound -- otherwise you'd hear them cawing......)

They came, and they went. If you embiggen this next shot (by clicking on it), you will see double images. The camera tried hard to get a sharp image, but that much movement, in low light, makes it very difficult for it to focus.

Note the blur of departing crows at the top, and in the lower right quadrant.

One hold-out for this location.........

I walked home on the 8th.

I stopped at the north-east corner of 5th and Packard (not even half a block from my office building) and recorded crow video.

We have grackles who completely cover the lines in certain parts of town in the evening. Some businesses have cut down their trees because the birds make such a mess they chase customers away.

But they do look lovely as they roost in the twilight. I love how they sit almost perfectly spaced.

Love the video!

I'm glad you enjoyed it! :-)

People who live under the trees the crows choose for their overnights do not enjoy the experience. Huge mess!

I guess that's true of a lot of nature -- nice to look at, but not so nice to experience up close and personal........

Sort of like when we had the squirrel in the house for several days last year. Too close!
