On the 23rd, I saw a squirrel digging in the snow. It brought up something large. And red. ??
An apple.
It had to work at carrying the apple up into the branches.
Another, bigger, squirrel came along, and the first one disappeared.
If I remember correctly, this is the bigger one.

It's too bad I didn't switch to video rather than just watching the rest of this story....
This squirrel carried the apple up into the small branches of the tree, to some small branches of the trees in the back of the yard, and onto the wires.
It tight-rope walked along the wires, carrying the apple.
At one point it lost its balance and hung under the wire with all four feet, still hanging on to the apple.
I was surprised when it righted itself, apple firmly in its jaws!
It continued its southward progression, on out of sight.
Squirrels are very good at what they do! (I wonder what proportion of its weight that apple was........)
For those of you who are not familiar with fox squirrels, these are the biggest squirrels I've seen. Bigger than gray squirrels, and much bigger than red squirrels (and ground squirrels). I'll bet this individual was at least a foot long from nose to rump. Fox squirrels as a group are big, and some of them are very big indeed, for squirrels. Their tails are nearly as long as they are. The tails don't have very much substance, but when the hair is fluffed out they have a lot of apparent bulk, making the whole critter seem even bigger.....

I hope he enjoyed his well fought for snack!
Indeed.
I wondered where he was going, as he headed south along the wires, his prize held firmly in his teeth....
