March 12 -- crow

.

On the 12th, I watched through the window as this crow peeled the tulip tree.

That tulip tree's small branches die at a rate more frequent than our other trees, and then they are bare of bark for a while before they fall off. This spring I have seen a squirrel, and now a crow peeling the bark.

I had always thought the bark just fell off those bare branches, but now I'm thinking it has had help.

These are pretty crummy pics, which is a disappointment as I was relatively close *and* it seems that the camera did just as I'd hoped and focused nicely on the crow. Too many twigs and small branches in the way, alas.

We are looking at the crow's back -- mainly its tail. All that stuff that looks like shreds about 8 or 10" long ... that's the bark, in the crow's beak.

I think we can see actual peeling taking place here.

Now the crow is walking up the branch, prior to taking off. I couldn't see where it went.....
