sketching, days 2 and 3

.

Here's the sketching I did on Jan 2 and 3. (Work gets in the way of my life, sometimes. I'm going to need to work on sketching even on the days I go to work....)

Excedrin bottle?  Boring.  Ah well.

Glasses?  Very interesting, especially with shadow from my bed-side halogen light.

Interesting, but very hard to render, I thought.

The sketchbook challenge has many professional and/or very experienced artists who are sketching the chosen topic. It's interesting to see what they choose to draw, and to look at all the different means of expression.

It seems to be the case that we are getting one topic per month. I sort of thought they were going to give a new prompt each day, but I guess that's not the way it works.

I guess I mean to draw something every day, and I won't bother about making them all fit that month's topic, except that I'll try to follow the monthly theme at least a couple of times.....

If we upload a drawing to the group flickr site, we are entered in that month's drawing for the excellent prizes.

Too bad I wrote on the camera page before I photographed it. Perhaps I'll draw the camera again.....

Wow, good for you. I'm still too intimidated to try this and have hidden behind the excuse of "too busy". Damned Perfectionism.

Work always seems to be getting in the way of life here. :D

Nothing at all boring about your sketches... I'm so happy that you're sharing! You're doing a great job Vicki!

I kind of like the writing on the page with the drawing. I think it adds quite a bit of character... go figure. :)

THE key to doing anything better is to do it at all..........

:-)

I can accept (gracefully, even ;-) ) that I am never going to be France Belleville.

But I can be a better me. And the way to get there is to do it. "Early and often." :-) Well, let's hope it's not necessary to do it "early" -- I"m not so good at that. :-)

Carolynn, I urge you to sneak into Staples, and buy a very cheap notebook. Composition book? One with lines -- so that you are sure that it's not precious, and, therefore, no work done it it is precious. Then pick up a nice Bic (or other cheap) pen. I like the way Bics roll across the paper......

And then ... when you are alone ... go in the bathroom and lock the door and draw the soap. Or your toothbrush. Or the drain in the sink. Then close up the book, and hide it.

And the next day, do the same....

:-)

And don't tell anyone..........

:-)

Justina -- that "work getting in the way of life" thing -- annoying!

:-)

Thank you for the kind thoughts about the sketches. I posted the glasses in the wrong order ... looking at that top page (with the date), I am happier with the images on that page now than I was when I drew them.

I should number the attempts..... :-)

The first one is the white glasses in the middle of the second page.

THe glasses are actually black (with colored polka dots), and I really liked the shadow. But then I didn't like my attempt at black glasses with a black shadow.......

I need to spend some more time with them.

I'm ok with writing on the page -- but on that camera page I said something snotty about the suggestion for drawing such high-value objects, so I had to censor it. Which left the page looking ... like it has been censored, oddly enough. :-) :-)

So I wish I'd taken that pic before I wrote on the page.

I may actually 'shop it better. I kinda want to post THAT drawing to their flickr group, as it is really from the first day.....

One of the things that is tricky about artistic endeavor is the conflict between DOING and JUDGING.

In order to get better, we have to be judgemental. Is this better than that? Should this be more curvy? How does the bow come out of the main part of the glasses frame?

But that Judge, sitting there saying "Hah! YOU'll never, ever! be France Belleville!!!!!" can easily make us afraid to do anything at all.

With photographs, it's pretty darn easy to separate the doing from the judging.

Harder, for the 'shopping part.

Drawing ... we really will be happier to put a sock in the Judge during the "doing" phase, and only let her out later.

My goal, with all of my artistic endeavor, is to let it be right-brained. I program computers for a living -- my left brain gets a gracious plenty of time to dominate.

So even when I am Judging photos, I do my best to let it be right-brained.

When I am triaging, my goal is to choose between two images. A, or B? Then the one I chose between A or B, and C.......... I work at letting it be "Do I like this, or that?" *without* analysis. Just ... which do I like better?

It's harder to keep the Judging right-brained during the 'shopping. I do know some things like "the rule of thirds," and know that I like contrast and diagonal lines and saturated color. So the left brain likes to cite those rules at the right brain.....

Talking about this makes me realize that I need to consciously put a sock in the left brain *while* I am drawing......

:-)

"What I lack in talent, I make up in volume."

Perhaps I'll say that, out loud, before every drawing session......

:-)
