January 31

.

Another good day for a nap.

Now here's something you don't see every day, in my neighborhood.

I caught a swoop of gray, out of the corner of my eye. (A black swoop of that size, I might see. There are plenty of crows who live around here. Gray, though......)

I turned my attention to the trees out front, and spotted this.

I've never seen a hawk sitting in a tree in my neighborhood before.

I've seen hawks here, and have seen the evidence of their hunting, but I'd never seen one sitting in a tree.

It wasn't there long. Long enough for me to grab the camera and snap off two shots, and then it glided down and around beside the across-the-street neighbor's house. It seemed to be headed for the ground, but it wasn't going very fast....

Looks like a Red Tail hawk. I'm unable to determine the size, but the smaller Cooper's hawk is more grey than brown and has a distinctive red eye. I don't see many red tails in my backyard; they are more apt to be on fence posts or telephone poles near the open fields where they soar and hunt. My resident Cooper's lurks about the backyards and will even sit on my fence!

Thanks!

It wasn't very big. Sort of crow size. Ish.

It may have been a bit bigger than a crow, but not a lot bigger.

I've seen some really big hawks around here, in trees along the expressways. This one wasn't nearly as big as some I've seen.

That Wilbur knows his comfy! :-)

Hawk sightings right here in my neighborhood are few and far between, so I always take notice.

I saw another, while we were walking, just a couple of days ago. I heard the sparrows fussing, and when I looked, I saw a small hawk, gray on top and pinkish underneath, chasing a sparrow. (it was smaller than a crow)

I'd be a little sad if I saw a hawk take a native bird, but one of the horde of English sparrows? Not so much.

It didn't catch one while I was looking.

All of that happened WAY too fast for a pic, alas. :-)
