Tree peonies are woody rather than herbaceous (hence the name :-) ). The ones I've seen may have flowers that are even bigger than herbaceous peonies, and I think they can bloom a bit earlier.

This one wasn't particularly early, but the flowers were huge.

That maple leaf image on the sidewalk stopped me in my tracks. :-) I've seen lots and lots of them, but that one was SO distinct........
