We had a visitor!
I wish I could tell one hawk from another. This one was about the size of a crow.
UPDATE: My buddy K. tells me this is a Cooper's hawk. Thanks, K!!!
There was a dead squirrel in the middle of the street.
I wonder if a hawk took the squirrel. This one flew away when a neighbor, oblivious, walked her dog by this tree. The squirrel was gone, later. I hope it fed someone.
There was a very little blue sky, on January 1, and we got about 15 seconds of sunshine.
I walked late in the afternoon. It was snowing and blowing, but once I wasn't going west any more, I positively enjoyed being out.
I am not a natively active person. It has taken me 18 months of walking almost every day to get to the point where I actually enjoy walking, some of the time. I wonder how long it will take before I can be sitting inside, warm and comfy, and think "I bet I'd enjoy a walk!"
I do like the walking, itself, better in wintertime (aside from ice -- walking on ice is no fun at all).
"They" say that exercise makes you feel better. For most of my life I never found that to be true. Now, sometimes, especially when it's cold outside, it's true.

Beautiful hawk, Vicki - nice capture! I'm not surprised knowing how observant you are. :)
Good for you with the walking. I used to run every afternoon back in Maryland (not so much here because of the altitude). I looked forward to it every day... it was an amazing stress-reliever for me.
Walking too, but I feel like I'm too busy anymore. It's honestly one of my goals this year - MUST start walking regularly again. I will look to you as my shining example! :D
Thanks! It was right in our front yard, not 30' from the cowshe ;-) in the study. (And it thoughtfully sat there for many minutes. :-) )
I didn't have the big camera, but the 6x zoom in the little one, plus a bunch of cropping!..... :-) Most of the shots were blurry, or were of the back of its head, but these two were pretty clear.
It's too bad his(?) tail was behind the branch; that seems to be a prime identifying feature for this species.
Exercise certainly doesn't come easy to me. I am much happier on the cowshe with my tea, novel, and a bonbon or two. :-) It usually takes me half a mile or so before I stop grumbling to myself about how I'd rather be on the cowshe (with the tea, etc). I'm trying to banish that sort of thought and think about how glad I am that I am ABLE to comfortably walk, etc.....
My first reaction was "MOI? A shining example for EXERCISE?????"
:-)
But then I thought -- "Well, it's easy to be a shining example of something that comes naturally (cowshe, novel, tea), but not so easy when it's something I have to get out the whip to make myself do, essentially every time....
Maybe the fact that I do it *despite* finding it difficult makes it shine more.
:-)
So -- thank you for the compliment.
:-)
