March 13 -- pastimes

.

One of the things I have been doing is going through file drawers and throwing out stuff I am sure is trash. Given the season, elderly tax info has drawn my attention.

It would be nice if all the different places with info on how long to keep things would agree as to how long.... I am sure that we no longer need the envelopes in which tax info arrived, and I surely hope we don't need the instructions for pre-tax-software taxes.

I have filled a paper grocery bag with tax detritus for recycling, and have shredded the papers that needed to be shredded.  (Shredded stuff will also be recycled, but needs separate handling.)

Along the way, I found some interesting things.

The hair-raising news is that I found a mailing label (which brought tax info to us, I bet) with both of our social security numbers on it!  Good grief.  Finding that sent me back into that grocery bag full of trash, to make sure that there was nothing else of the kind still stuck to elderly tax-info booklets!

The amusing news is that one year's info included an empty manila folder labeled "Virginia Peebles," and this paperback copy of Maurice Sendak's Chicken Soup with Rice.

We love chicken soup (with or without rice), and we love Chicken Soup with Rice. I was happy to rescue it from extreme obscurity in the tax file drawer, and happy to stop sorting and enjoy it yet again.

We have old manila folders which were thrown away at work, and we have old manila folders which were part of my better half's school board service.  Neither of us has any idea who Virginia is, nor why we have a folder with her name on it.  We wish her well, where ever she may be.

I am happy to have a much emptier file drawer, and happy to get another grocery bag of trash out of the house!
