May 24

.

Some time between the 24th, and the time I first showed you four baby robins, one disappeared.  Here are the three who remained.

Looking into the future a bit ....

On the 25th, I came home from somewhere to find only two in the nest.  I looked on the ground, and found the third one, crouched some distance from the nest.  No feathers almost hardly, and eyes still closed -- no way could that baby survive on the ground.

I set up the ladder next to the nest, then picked up the baby and put it back with its siblings.

I didn't take any pictures of the proceedings.  I wanted to get it back where it belonged as quickly as possible.

It had been in the sun, and felt quite warm in my hand.  It stretched out its little legs, and its neck, and opened its mouth while I held it, as though its only reaction to disturbance was to ask to be fed.

You can see, above, that there wasn't much room in the nest for all three.  I put it on top of the other two, and they all moved around to accommodate each other.

I have read that birds do not mind the scent of people on their babies, so I wasn't concerned that the parents would mind that I touched the baby.  I did wonder, though -- it's been very dry, and it seems to take the parents a long time between feedings.  I hope that putting back the one didn't jeopardize the other two...........

Still on the topic of local birds ... the last pics I showed you of Bo (or Clarissa) happened to be taken the last day they tried to build a nest over our patio.  After two solid months of work, they amassed a large collection of building materials, with nothing nest-like to show for all of their effort.  We bid them farewell, and hope they found a site that better suits their nest-building capabilities!

Walking, later than usual.
