Walking with Wilbur.
I heard the ladder being extended before we rounded the corner. Then I saw the it hooked on the wire.
I don't think I've ever seen that before. Who knew that the wire was strong enough to hold the ladder! It must be a bundle of ... stuff ... including a cable for strength, as well as all the signal-carrying wires.
I watched her climb up, and hook a belt (connected to the tool belt around her waist) up over the wire, around the top of the ladder, and back to her belt. I don't remember seeing anyone who was working up (or near) a telephone pole take that sort of safety precaution.
I caught her eye, and told her I thought it was excellent
that women were doing that work. I said it was cool that the wire could
support the ladder; that it made her job a lot easier, and she agreed.
We
chatted a bit about the lovely day. She said that she worked until
8:00 pm, and was not looking forward to the coming dark. I told her I
would think of her and hope for good weather, when she was working up
there in the dark......
Say what you will about hell and hand baskets (and I'll be right there agreeing with you!) -- many things are really a LOT better now than they were when I was my daughter's age!
