April 4

.

This morning we got up and went back to city center where the fancy food shops and produce stands are.  We got more bread (did I say we got kamut bread yesterday?  It was good, and noticeably different from wheat bread.).  We also got a couple of little quiches (artichoke) from the same bakery.  We got asparagus and strawberries at a food stand, and tonight we had those things for supper.

We had a good lunch in a busy restaurant. I had bean and vegetable soup and grilled veggies.  The veg were fine, and the soup was really good.  My daughter had pasta with ragu (which is a way of making sauce with ground meat, I think).  That was good, too.

There was a good gelato place near the restaurant, and my daughter had the cream-and-caramelized-fig.  (You can't get *that* in Ann Arbor........)  I am not a big fan of figs, but I thought it was good, too.  I liked the contrast between the creamy texture of the basic gelato and the more sticky thick texture of the figs, as well as the taste.

We got some things attended to -- she answered some email that has backed up over the last few days, and we went to a place of business to get our entry for the Uffizi in Florence printed.  I think maybe it was an internet cafe, minus the cafe....  In any case, my daughter had saved her confirmation email from the site where we bought the tix to a flash drive, and the proprietor was able to print it for us, no problem.

Our dinner was quick and good, and we've had a peaceful evening, too.

I do need some down time, even on vacation.

I've been reading Pride and Predjudice on my newly gifted elderly ipod/iphone, and am up to Wickham's disgraceful decampment with Lydia.....  I am glad for some time to just sit and read.

Here's the random factoid of the day -- in Venice, there were postcards for sale EVERYWHERE.  Here -- not so much.  We actively looked for some today, and didn't encounter any.  We know we saw some yesterday, but I was too tired at that point to want to stop and look...........

Time for bed, so we can get a lot of sleep and have another lovely peaceful day tomorrow.

Buona notte!

So loving to hear about your trip -- it does sound like you are eating well! It's always fun to eat somewhere else!

I, too, need downtime on a trip or I just overload so much I can't enjoy it. You're wise to recognize it and take it!

Thanks! Food is my daughter's special interest, and she works for Zingerman's. :-) So it is a major focus of our travels. She does a lot of research (and has a lot of good resources to tap) to figure out where/what we should eat.

Down time has been an issue -- you are so right that I need to make sure to get enough.......

I finished Pride and Prejudice this morning (started since we left home), so I must be doing ok.

:-)

Sounds like traveling with a foodie is the way to go! I wonder if the chalkboards Greg (Oberle) did at Zingermann's are still in place or long done over? We'll always be grateful to them for giving our kid the start he needed in chalk art!

The deli is in the process of a huge renovation. The historic district finally allowed them to tear down a (literally) burnt-out house next door, and build a small building. There is now a new kitchen, and more space for eating indoors, on-site.

The original building is being reworked to make other use of the kitchen space.

It is lovely when a business makes good treatment of its employees an important part of its business plan! I'm so glad to know it was a good place for your son. :-)

I just googled him -- talks at the DIA! Cool!!!
