An article from The New York Times says "about 90 percent of bicyclists killed in the United States in 2009 were not wearing helmets. A majority were middle-aged men."
"According to the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, cycling accidents played a role
in about 86,000 of the 447,000 sports-related head injuries treated in
emergency rooms in 2009. Football accounted for 47,000 of those head
injuries, and baseball played a role in 38,394."
Nobody plans to fall off.
Nobody plans to get hit by a car.
Wear a helmet. Just in case.
UPDATE 6/22: When I walked home from yoga this week, a bike accident happened on the street behind me. I was taking a pic. Another biker WHIZZED by me on the sidewalk. I glanced behind me to see if it was safe to walk out onto the sidewalk, and that's when I saw the fallen biker. I don't know what happened -- I didn't hear anything at all. When I looked, a young man was on his back on the grass, and another young man stopped and moved a fallen bike out of the street. Several cars stopped as I watched. Five or six people were there ready to help. I'm not a first responder, and it seemed like people were handling it, so I walked on.
In the short time I watched, the man on the ground did not move. I hope he is ok. He was not wearing a helmet............

Amen. As a partner of a bike rider/racer who has had more than his share of crashes, I can tell you that helmets have saved his life AND his brain more than once. Thanks for this.
Yikes. So glad he was wearing his helmet!
I am always boggled when I see people riding with no helmet. Especially parents with children. The children often have a helmet, but the parents? Much less often.
Weirds me out that they don't know that their kids are much more likely to imitate what they see done than they are to do what they are told, once they are out of sight.......
