This is the oldest song we've listened to for The History of Rock that really sounds like Rock and Roll to me. (Not the vocals. Don't know what's up with that "Peggy Sue-hoo-hoo-hoo" style of singing.....)
I've been noticing that percussion is much more forward in R&R than it was in music before the 1950s. When I listen for the percussion in a big band, for example, it's there, but it's not driving the show. "Peggy Sue" has that driving percussion, and also has the electric guitar I associate with R&R.........
