Apparently birds and other critters can grow new hair cells in their ears throughout life. Mammals can't.
The following paragraph is a gross undersimplification, and may well contain errors introduced by me:
Scientists have identified a gene that can direct brand-new cells to grow up to be ear-hair cells. In mammals, this gene is not expressed. Experiments are underway to cause the gene to be expressed. Mice seem to be growing new ear-hair cells as a result..........
