July 29

.

"Journalistic" rather than "artistic" -- on the 29th we went to Zingerman's Bakehouse for lunch.  They send me email every day, telling me which soups and which special bakes they are making that day.

The Bakehouse, alas, is outside Ann Arbor, diagonally across town.  Not nearly as conveniently close as the Deli (which is about a mile from our house).  You could get to the Bakehouse from here on the bus, but you'd have to transfer downtown and I bet it would take an hour to get there.  I should try it some time, just to see.

At any rate -- it's much easier to get there in a car.

On the 29th, we did just that.  Left to right -- bean soup, tuna salad sandwich, potato/leek soup, and "Three Little Piggies" sandwich.  All are very good, and the soups are outstanding.  I love them both, with the edge going to the bean soup.  Mmmmmmmmmm!

If I lived closer to the Bakehouse, I would eat there A LOT.  At least once a week......

The Bakehouse (along with several other Zingerman's businesses) is in an industrial-park setting.  They have gussied up their part of the complex -- painting the brown bits orange, and planting lots of flowers.

These are similar to prairie dock in that they are tall, they have very big leaves, and they have smallish (for the size of the plant) yellow flowers.  But notice that the leaves are wrapped right around the stems, rather than being on their own little stems, and that they go on up the stems, rather than just being at the base of the plant.  I suspect this is the same big plant we saw as we left the peony garden at the Arboretum, and also at the Botanical Garden........

Its flowers must be tasty -- this one has been gnawed on........

You can see what I mean about the leaves being wrapped right around the stems.......

Very tall, for a herbaceous plant in a temperate climate.  Well over 6' tall.

Love the signs........  And note tiny garden underneath.

I don't recognize either of these plants.
