IBM's Watson (a program that runs on supercomputers) beat the human best Jeopardy player ever. Now Watson is being aimed at various data-intensive health issues.
The Mayo clinic is going to see if Watson can help them match cancer patients to clinical trials. At this point, that matching is slow and requires a lot of person time. The hope is that Watson will be able to find optimal matches much more quickly. This will help get more qualified people into trials, which is good for the trials, and probably good for the people, too.
Other institutions are looking at other ways for Watson to help with health issues....
