October 1

.

October?  Already?  Usually I am SO over being TOO HOT by this time of year that I am eager for cold weather.  This summer has been so lovely that I'm taken aback by the arrival of fall.

On the 1st, I got dropped at the farmers' market.  I made a sad miscalculation this year -- I didn't buy basil for pesto in August.  I thought there would be plenty of time, but basil is about the most cold-sensitive plant I know, and our chilly September meant ... no basil.

I was hoping there might be some on the 1st, but no such luck.  Alas.

I went over to the deli for bread.  I passed the florist, who has flowers in front of as well as inside her shop.

Sweet alyssum and dusty miller.

It had rained, overnight.  Many droplets on the dusty miller.

More sweet alyssum.  I think the bigger flower is a weed, and I'm not sure if the carroty foliage belongs to the weed, or if it's a third plant.

This stuff is wet, too.

Another weed.

With more droplets.

More sweet alyssum.

Iris.

Goldenrod.  Most of the goldenrod is done for the year, but here and there you can still see it.

I've seen this before -- all that goldenrod "fuzz" is really tiny flowers -- but I'm still interested in a look at the itty bitty flowers.

Lily-of-the-valley fruits.

Weedy baby tree.  I bet this is a Siberian elm.

I like the layers of back-lit leaves and shadows.

I took advantage of going to the deli by myself (and not having a huge weight of stuff from the farmers' market) and went to the gift shop across Detroit street from the deli.  It was fun to browse through the offerings.  They have lots of interesting cards and magnets, and many appealing gifts.  They have Michigan and Ann Arbor souvenirs that are more my style than things one often sees in gift shops.  They support many area artists -- I recommend a stop at Catching Fireflies, the next time you are shopping in Ann Arbor.

Amelanchier.

Roses.

Love what's left when the flowers are gone.......

The last time I walked home from the farmers' market, my shoulders were not happy with having carried my purchases all that way (it's about a mile).

On the 1st, even though I didn't have much to carry, I took the bus.

Locust leaves on the sidewalk, as I wait for the bus.

Maple leaf on the sidewalk, as I walk up the hill to my house.  The sun came out!
