January 2

.

The end of an era.

I grew up in a household where the family calendar was managed on the inside of a cupboard door.  All the events and happenings were noted there, and everyone's schedule could be deduced, where it wasn't spelled out.

When I grew up and had a household of my own, the calendar was managed right here, next to the tea, next to the plates.

For a while, this calendar was so full of stuff I used different colors of markers to keep track of who was supposed to be where, when.

With the advent of electronic calendars, this one has been used less, and less, and less.  For the last year or so, it has kept track of when the heartworm pills were doled out, and has noted a few bridge tournaments, and that's about it.

Now there are no heartworm pills to keep track of, and -- there's not one mark on this calendar for the whole month of December.

I don't think I'm going to be replacing this one.  I suppose I may miss having something interesting to look at on the inside of the door.  But I know I won't be keeping track of what's going on in our house (and beyond) in this way.  Not any more.
