March 4 -- botanical garden conservatory, part 3

.

There are many small-tree-sized plants in the conservatory that aren't actually trees.  Banana plants, for example.

I'm not sure if this is a tree or a "tree," but look how much there is going on at the top!  New leaves burgeoning.  Old pine-cone-ish things that I have to guess are fruiting bodies of one sort or another.  Old leaves, on their way out.  A new fruiting body.  I wish this shot were clearer....

I wonder if I had the camera on macro-focus -- this one isn't all that clear, either.

I think this is a new-ish fruiting body (assuming my conclusion about what these "pine cone" structures are is correct....).

A closer look....

Here's something quieter, but no less wonderful -- cacao pods, from which we get chocolate!  These were 6-8" long, I think.

Such a lift to winter-dulled spirits, to see green, Green, GREEN everywhere!

From a bit farther away -- same plant(s) as above.  A very nice little groundcover.

Another epiphyte.  Not nearly as showy as those bromeliads that greeted us when we stepped inside the conservatory, but interesting, the way it closely hugs the bark it's growing on......

A closer look....

A banyan tree.  Genus "ficus" -- I can see how this could be related to the little ficus tree in my living room.....

Flowers.

Fruit.  (We learn later that this is a Surinam cherry.  It's about an inch across.  I liked the way it looked on the brick wall....)

Begonia as groundcover.

GREEN!  These leaves must be about a yard long.

Another "pine cone" fruiting body.  I am not sure if this is from the same plant as above, or not.
