March 4 -- botanical garden conservatory, part 4

.

Different greens, different textures........  And some nice red color contrast.

Amaryllis!  They are all in pots, brought in to be color and FLOWERS, in the depths of winter.

In computer games, you can find "Easter eggs," which are often "just for fun" (not advancing the game).  So I'm calling these "Easter eggs."  Just for fun, no birds will appear.  I didn't notice them when I took the pic above.  But when I got that pic on "the big screen" -- there they were.

It makes me wonder -- if birds live in Lowe's year 'round (and they do!), why/how are there no birds in the conservatory?  Especially after the roof was open for weeks and weeks last summer when the agave bloomed?

Back to the amaryllis!  Short, tall, double, stripey....

One bulb makes one stalk, and if the plant has been happy in the previous year, there will be four flowers.  You can see, in the lower right corner, the four flowers from one bulb.

Here are some pink ones.

Skinny red stripes and speckles, and a white one with red-tinged edges.

This double white one was (just slightly) fragrant.

more pink ones, over a goldfish pond.

Another look at the ones by the fish.  The one nearest us hasn't entirely opened yet.  I always think the nearly-open buds look like the front ends of baleen whales............
