Gulen

.

I am sorry to report that my "nephew" Gulen is no longer with us on this mortal coil.

My brother and sister-in-law adopted this big yaller dog from the shelter as an adult.

(He had perfectly good front legs; he just liked to lie on top of them.)

He came with baggage, as rescued dogs often do.  As with my Wilbur, he kept his own council about many things, not taking a human's word that a situation was ok if his own conclusion was that it was not.  And he liked to go walkabout.....

He was very patient with his doggy "sister," who liked to chew on his ears, and he was charmingly willing to snuggle with visiting aunties.

Over the last year or so, he began to show signs of something that looked to this corgi person a lot like degenerative myelopathy.  First one hind leg became unable to answer the call to action, and then the other.  DM moves inexorably up the spine from tail to skull, robbing those afflicted with it of one function after another.  (FAR too many corgis have DM............)

With love, and with respect for his waning control over his body and his feelings of increasing frustration, Gulen's family made that last and hardest decision.

He had a very expressive face.

I hope he's running free, somewhere where there are lots of couches, and plenty of folks eager to sit with him and give him scritches.  And treats.

Good boy, Gulen.

Oh, Gulen had the most soulful face. It had to be just heartbreaking for his people to say goodbye. And good for them, having made a wonderful home for this rescue dog. If that photo is any indication, he gave as good as he got. Sweet boy -- I hope he's romping pain free somewhere.

I got to spend lots of time cuddling with him, over the years. I'll miss that....

Like you, I hope he is running free, enjoying unfettered mobility.
