May 26 -- part 3, more river walk in Zion

.

Here is a link to the interactive expedition map.

Walking back downstream along the Virgin River in Zion National Park.

Lichens on a rock.

Closer crop of upper left.

Intrepid plants growing on the side of a big rock formation.  With their shadows.

This next is not a good image, but you can see plants growing out of the walls, up and up.....

Another look at the above, showing more of what's at ground level.  People.  And more people.

Tree, hanging on tight and growing in the river.

A closer look at the tree's roots.

The river, and the shore.

I think this is watercress.

Love the reflections on the water.

Closeup.  Watercress, I think?

Ripples on the water.

Now we are back to the spot where we joined the Riverside Walk.  Lots of stacks of stones.  (This is a closer crop of the middle of the above.)

Back on the shuttle bus, moving to another location within Zion.

Zion Lodge.  We were unable to book a room within the park, even though we tried to do so 11 months before we were planning to be there.

We had thought we might get some food here, but it was jammed.  We settled for cheap ice cream bars on the lawn.  We sat and ate under that huge three, which I think is a cottonwood.

This was on the ground where we sat to eat our ice cream.

Here's a link to the next post about the Grand Canyon trip.

I loved Zion. We were there in December a few years ago -- stayed in Springdale. Such fun!

Zion was definitely one of my very favorite parts of our expedition! :-)
