I think this was a puffball. I remember finding them often, when I was a kid on my way to elementary school. I'm not sure I'd seen one since then, until October 16. This was several inches across.
Crocus. I think this is a regular crocus, not an autumn crocus, despite the fact that it was blooming on October 16.
