August 16, 2018

.

On August 16 there was bridge.  I dropped my better half at the casino.  Maybe the only place in town with big enough rooms (and enough card tables?) for a bridge tournament?

(Casinos are illegal in Michigan.  Unless someone gets special dispensation.  Native Americans are allowed to have casinos, hence the one in Petoskey.  Detroit is also allowed to have casinos......)

Dahlias and petunias outside the casino.

Digression -- I always wear black jeans.  The first parts that wear out are the bottoms of the legs (especially in the back).  The diagonal line across the next image is the bottom of a pants leg, showing the worn out fold at the very bottom of the leg.

When the bottom gets raggedy, I put purchased bias tape over it  This covers up the raggedy, and since it's black on black, it's not very visible.  (Less so than in this image, which has been lightened to show detail.)

The sort-of-vertical lines in the image are the bottom of a pants leg from a different pair of jeans.  You can see the bias tape in action -- and you can see that the bias tape is wearing through, ready to be removed and replaced with new bias tape.  This vertical pair is in the best condition of the three pairs I wear these days, but it needs some attention.

The other two pairs were seriously raggedy again.  Their bias tape was completely worn through, most of the way around the leg.

I decided to take advantage of my time as a passenger on the way to and from Petoskey and remove the bias tape from the rattier jeans, so I could replace it with new bias tape.  (Removing the bias tape is all hand work; perfect for sitting in the car.  If it's daylight......)

I also took along a knitted dishcloth that is *almost* finished.  It needs its yarn ends woven in, so it was still on the circular needle I used to knit it.  Alas, ends-woven-in remains to be done.  The crochet hook I had with me was too fat, and a struggle to use.  I didn't want to argue with it in a moving car.

End of Digression.

On the way to the casino, on the morning of August 16, we went by the sort of big strip mall that has big-box stores.  Like JoAnn's.....

After I dropped the bridge player at the casino, I went to JoAnn's.  I wasn't sure if I had enough bias tape to shore up the bottoms of the legs of two pairs of jeans.

JoAnn's has bias tape, and they have cotton yarn............  I bought bias tape, and a new ball of yarn.

I took myself back to East Park, east of Petoskey along Little Traverse Bay.  My plan was to sit on the bench, in the shade, and knit.  Unfortunately my plan was foiled by the sun being too high in the sky for the shade to fall on the bench.  Humph.  So I mostly stood in the shade, hoping it would move and cover the bench.  And knitted.  I did about half the dishcloth on August 16, by the shore of Lake Michigan, and did the other half in the car on the way home.  (Yes, now I have two dishcloths with ends needing to be woven in...................)

As it approached 6:00 on August 16, I headed back toward the casino.  If he wasn't quite finished, I had plenty to do, with a half-finished dishcloth, and the books I have on my phone.

Digression -- No matter where I am, some nice person is just waiting to read to me from a number of different books.  (This is a totally excellent thing about a smart phone......)  End of Digression.

As it turned out, the bridge was over.  My better half came out into the parking lot to find me.  The plan was that we were to meet his bridge team at a food court for supper.

It turned out that one end of the food court was a bar.  You could choose your food from a number of carts, and then eat in the bar (in the shade).  So that's what we did.

Yes, I spent time in a bar.  And in a casino, all in one day.  (I walked into the casino to see where the bridge was, first thing in the morning.  It was sort of shocking -- it looks JUST like a casino -- all slot machines and people smoking.  I thought "NEVADA????  How can I be in Nevada????????????????  Oh.  Right.  It's a *casino*.  Eeuwwh!")

Just like the casino was a casino, the bar was a bar.  Incredibly noisy, and full of increasingly inebriated people.  Gee, I wonder why I never spend time in bars......................................

The people on the team were nice and what I could hear of what they said sounded interesting.

After we'd finished eating, there was a trivia contest.  Our table did ok but not great.  We began to collaborate with a table next to us, who were probably 20 years younger than we were.  "Music of the 80s" (one of the trivia topics) was a bit young for us, and a bit old for them.  They decided that the table that kept winning was cheating -- "They are all 25!  How do they know the music of the 80s?"  Good point..........  (We had been warned that using our devices to look things up was cheating.....)

The trivia contest was marginally amusing, but went on and on and on......  And did I mention the people around us got more and more inebriated?

Finally we headed back to the hotel.  Another nice sky over Lake Michigan.

Petoskey really does have a lot of nice flowers downtown.  These zinnias were planted under a young street tree.
