catalpa

A catalpa is a good-sized tree, with big heart-shaped leaves and these exotic-looking flowers. It makes long (12") seed pods (another exotic characteristic).

Someone told me that people who liked to fish planted catalpa, because they were home to a big ol' worm that was good for bait. Sounds like 'which came first, chicken or the egg', but I think it's a fun little catalpa story. I remember these trees as being in older neighborhoods, and tough as nails.

When we were kids, we called them "banana split trees." Why, I'm not sure.... The pods are way longer and skinner than bananas. And browner. They do split, so that part may have made some tiny bit of sense.....
