The Toledo Zoo has had a butterfly house this summer. I hadn't read carefully and didn't realize that they had only "local species." We have been to the Mackinac Island Butterfly House and were expecting some more exotics.
Ah well, never mind, even though these were supposed to be "locals," the only one I've ever seen in the wild is the monarch........ (Oh, not true, I've seen tiger swallowtails, but I didn't get any pics of them on the 23rd.)
The butterflies arrive in cocoons, and come out in this protected area, before going out into the main space.
Aren't the cocoons interesting shapes/colors? I love the green ones, and look at the ones with horns, in the middle distance.....
My intelligent and forward-thinking DH reminded me to take a pic of the id info.
I believe this is a monarch (though I confess I can't tell it froma viceroy).
Pipevine swallowtail.
I believe the orange one is a julia, and the white one is a great southern white.
White peacock.
Queen. Or soldier -- they look alike to me on the id thing.....
Zebra longwing.
