Swedish Vallhunds -- corgi cousins -- appeared at Westminster for the first time this year.
Here is what the crowd looked like, as we waited for the Vallhunds to come into the ring. You can see that, during the day time, the floor of the Garden is divided into several rings. You can also see that random spectators can walk around on the floor.
Isn't that cool? If you go to a basketball game in Madison Square Garden, you are not standing in the middle of the floor. If you go to a hockey game, likewise. But if you go to the dog show, you can stand in the middle of the floor at Madison Square Garden, and look around................. Cool!

The first time I ever saw a Vallhund in the flesh (one used to live on our block), I thought "Hey! Look at the ... tall gray corgi! With little ears! No, wait, it's a Vallhund!"

At dog shows, any dog over seven is considered "senior." Often dogs retire younger than seven. Since Vallhunds have only been recognized by the AKC so recently, this was the first chance to show them at Westminster. The buzz in the crowd around us was that this handsome fellow is one of the founders of the breed in the US, and that he is 12. The oldest dog shown at Westminster this year, people said. How nice to get to see his smiling self.
