I talked to Buzz's vet (Wilbur's wasn't in today).
She says that giving Wibbs 1/4 rimadyl twice a day is fine, as are the pumpkin and yogurt. She suggested the immune-boosting yogurt drink things they make for people, so we'll get some of that.
She suggested giving him rice and turkey/chicken/egg for a few days, to see if that helps his digestive tract.
I read about the doxycycline, too. It is good for an astonishing array of things, including Y. pestis [for you NCIS fans], anthrax, various tick-borne nasties, some non-bacterial microbials like malaria, and even some kinds of worm-things (it kills their symbiotic bacteria and then they can't reproduce........
Anyway, to try to stick to the current topic, the product insert (for Pfizer's vibramycin brand of doxy) said that it is common for antibiotics to cause digestive upset.
I asked the vet about a canine-focused probiotic. She said that those are really being pushed now, but she is not clear that they work better than the immune-boosting ones sold for people at grocery stores, and they are a lot more expensive.
She said that while people get sore throats all the time, dogs don't, and this whole thing Wilbur is going through is really weird.
Sigh.
He is clearly not himself, but not too bad. He is restless. Bedroom. Study. Bedroom. Downstairs. Bedroom. Still shivering.
I'll give him 1/4 rimadyl in another couple of hours, and we'll see how he does.....

The other thing about the dog probiotics is that they are not tested/approved like the human ones. I give mine the probiotics for human kids when they have tummy upsets.
Super Supplements store has the best prices.
I hadn't thought about them not being tested. Makes sense. Thanks for the tip!
