September 22, the rest of the way home

.

Rose hips.

Lots and lots of rose hips.

Love the color, and love the ... do we think these are the sepals left from when these were flowers?

Still with lots of flowers, too.

Do we think these are rugosas?

Asters. (?) Love the color, and love the spikey sepals (?) around the buds.

Zinnias.

Black walnuts. Many, many black walnuts. I'm glad I don't need to walk through here in the dark. In fact, I'm glad I don't need to walk through here at all.

The nuts are very hard, so stepping on one of these could land you in the brown mess left when their hulls rot........... Walnut hulls will dye fabric with no added mordant.

(Most kinds of natural dye substances require a mordant -- from the French "bite" -- to help the dye really latch on to the fiber and be more permanent. Iron is a mordant, as is copper. As is chrome, but chrome is quite poisonous..... Walnuts will leave a permanent mark all by themselves.)

Black walnuts have a very distinctive taste. Some people love them, and other people (who love other tree nuts, including English walnuts) really don't like the taste of black walnuts at all. I fall in the latter category.

A car's weight will mash a walnut. This section of road is often full of birds and other small creatures, taking advantage of the windfall.

Autumn clematis.

The 22nd was another very nice day.
