Yes. Yes, they do.
I'm not sure where blue jay nests are supposed to be, but I'm thinking that maybe a smooth piece of wood is not the right place.
The other day I watched one bird grab one end of a twig and sort of wiggle it against the board, as though to stick it down. Then, it grabbed the other end of the twig, moving the twig.
The first end was put back, and wiggled down against the board.
The other end was grabbed, and the first end moved! Go figure!!!
This sequence was repeated six or eight times, while I watched.....
They are very persistent, but don't seem to be learning anything.....
In the mean time, we have a robin who spent a very small amount of time refurbishing last year's nest, and she's sitting on eggs now. She started a good two weeks after the blue jays started.....
