On the 28th, we went to the University of Michigan's arboretum to spend some time in the peony garden.
Last year, when we visited the peonies, it rained on us, and then it rained harder. We left, concerned about the cameras.... (See last year's post for an overhead view of the size of the peony garden.)
This year no precipitation threatened. But it was hot (95?) and much more crowded than last year............
Many of the peonies were past their prime, but many were still lovely............
There are labels, one to a bed (36 plants in a bed). It was kind of a pain to identify the plants, so, mostly, I didn't.
I think this is Petite Renée. She was so cute I had to try to figure out her name.
Two closeups of Renée.
Closeup of the previous....
There are roses along the north edge of the peony garden. The buds, so peachy, but the open flowers, so white.....
Ok, back to the peonies............
There is laminated info available to carry around, identifying peonies with specific characteristics. I used the one for fragrant peonies (leaving behind the info on old varieties, and the info on peonies named after women).
I only kept track of the ones that I thought smelled good (and were still in full bloom).
I believe this is Duchesse de Nemours
I think this is Madame Calot.
Mrs. J. V. Elund. I like her round, round shape.
Bayadere. This one was interesting because most of the blooms were dessicated.
The harsh light made it hard to capture the crinkled papery look of the petals..... I gave this a light posteredging, which helps a bit, I think....
Augustin d'Hour.
I'm so glad we went to see the peonies!
