On the 23rd my buddy K. and I went to Grand Rapids to see the American Quilters' Society quilt show. We parked in a lot across the river from the convention center (visible, center left, with the curvy front.
I thought the show was, for the most part, disappointing. There was a lot of work that I did not find to be interesting. In my view, near-perfect technique does not substitute for a basic understanding (and use) of design principles, like use of value contrast, or, say, composition....
There was an Alzheimer's exhibit, including a set of small works. As a group, I thought they were head and shoulders above most of the rest of the show.
This is one of my favorites.
Of course there was interesting work, sprinkled here and there. This is "Biking on the Board Walk," by Sue Holdaway-Heys. Sue is a member of the Ann Arbor quilt guild, and always does interesting work.
Wouldn't you be more likely to go riding, if you could take this excellent bike? I know I would.
Here is some excellent value contrast. I didn't notice until I was looking at this on "the big screen" that the quilting is all circles. A nice contrast to the squares!
Organic Log Cabin #4, Jennifer Emry.
I like this one, too.
Happy Quilt #1, Diane Ruder.
I like all the little circles, with all different fabrics.
The title is Be Happy, and I cannot, alas, read the artist's name.
I really tried to get pics of the whole quilts, rather than only the details which interested me.....
Mom, this made me think of your "It's FUN" story from going to the fair in your youth.....
State Fair, Ruth McCormick.
There was a small exhibit of house quilts. Love these three......
Home is Where Your Story Begins, Jamie Fingal.
Welcome Home, Tracey Snyder-Stone. This is a lot more 3D than it looks in this image. The girl and the clown are a layer, and the yellow and red tent is a layer, both standing out distinctly from each other and from the elephant layer.
Bird House, Pamela Allen.
Love the birds.....
