Tree peonies usually bloom weeks earlier than herbaceous peonies. Not this year.....

Herbaceous peony. I believe this is Festivus Maximus -- one of my favorites. Max is an old variety, filled with frilly froth, enhanced by magenta highlights, pleasantly scented.
