June 2, peony garden, 1

.

On June 2, I went to the University's Arboretum's peony garden.  A sign said this is the largest collection of heirloom peonies in North America.

June 2 was early in peony season; hardly any of the peonies were spent.  This is one of the few....

Hey - Mike and I went last weekend and the garden is winding down. We have noticed over time that many of the white blossoms smell wonderful where the more colorful ones tend to have almost no scent. Maybe they don't have to try as hard because they are brightly colored? Anyway, this is a lovely garden. Always enjoy walking through during bloom time.

When peonies go, they go in a hurry....

I bought a bouquet of peonies two weeks ago at the farmers' market. I found that the ones that smelled the best to me were the white ones. I thought that when the darker pink or redder ones had scent, I didn't enjoy it. (I spent a lot of time iwth my nose in peonies, that morning!)

At the Arb (near the entrance to the peony garden) they ahve laminated cards about "fragrant peonies" (and other groups), and I think all the fragrant ones were white or very pale. I still thought some of those were better than others.........

I wonder if what's supposed to be cool about the darker ones is the color, rather than the fragrance.... I didn't think the single white ones were a nice (fragrance wise) as the more double ones.......
